Dear friend of the Fil-Am community,

We are a group of multimedia professionals who are holding the 5th annual search for The Outstanding Filipino Americans in New York (TOFA-NY) to coincide with the annual celebration of Filipino American History Month in October.

An awards ceremony to be keynoted by Consul General Mario de Leon Jr., will be held October 31, 8 p.m. at Carnegie Hall in New York. We believe the best in our community deserve to feel truly honored in an iconic location synonymous with glorious celebration and greatness. Community leader Loida Nicolas-Lewis; Hon. Lorna Schofield (first U.S. federal judge of Filipino descent); Janet Nepales (the only Filipino member of the Hol-lywood Foreign Press Association that produces the annual Golden Globe Awards); New York Power Authority President & CEO Gil Quiniones and Ken Natori, son of fashion mogul Josie Natori and vice president of The Natori Company will deliver inspirational speeches. “Concert King” Martin Nievera will provide entertainment while “Asia’s King of Talk” Boy Abunda will emcee the evening’s program. Forty-two finalists from 14 categories have been pre-selected by a panel of experts that include the organizers. The categories are: Arts & Culture; Business & Entrepreneurship; Community Service & Advocacy; Courage of Conviction; Education, Research & Technol-ogy; Entertainment; Fashion & Style; Food & Restaurants; Health Care; LGBT Advocacy; Media & Publishing; Public Service & Politics; Senior Welfare and Advocacy; and Youth & Sports.

The motivation for our search is to celebrate the achievements of Filipino-Americans who are quietly doing outstanding work in their chosen professions, craft or trade, but are largely unheralded, maybe because we do not see them often enough in many community events. By their deeds, how-ever, they are raising the profile of Filipino Americans in the N.Y. area and promoting the exceptional quality of service, artistry and professionalism Filipinos are known in the world for.

The finalists who are various personalities and organizations that have made us one sig-nificant and dynamic community in this part of the U.S. were chosen on primarily on merit.
