Second Chance at Life is a fine arts initiative meant to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation from both living and deceased donors. This event and exhibition will raise funds for the most vulnerable organ transplant patients through a private artist reception and silent auction.
Artists from around the country will submit their transplant related artwork, along with their personal transplant journey and a statement about why transplant is important. The exhibition will take place at the prestigious Point Gallery on Santa Fe Blvd throughout the first two weeks in April 2015.
All proceeds from this event will go to the Foundation's Patient Assistance Program and 1+1=LIFE Mentorship Program. The Patient Assistance Program helps the most vulnerable transplant patients through financial grants, and the 1+1=LIFE Mentorship Program is a free mentoring program for those currently going through the process. This project is meant to unite the world of art and that of transplant, educating the public about a topic they may not have thought much about. Every day, 18 people die while waiting for a lifesaving transplant. Of the 123,472 people awaiting a transplant, 117,168 could be saved by a living donor. Educating the public and increasing the amount of living donors is the mission of both the American Transplant Foundation and the Second Chance at Life arts exhibition.
“Organ donation and transplantation is important because it is a remedy for many incurable diseases. I’m not sure the public recognizes that transplantation is a medical discovery that saves lives that would otherwise be lost. How it is a total waste to not be an organ donor. How simple it is to save lives by signing up to donate, to eliminate the “waiting List”, and give life to so many who deserve to live.
Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to be considered to show this artwork. It is a dream and vision of our family to use our experience to change lives and give others a chance to live.”
