Pin Down Bladder Cancer is hosting the first (soon to be annual) 5K and 10K charity race on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan on Saturday, April 18, in partnership with NYCRUNS. We expect 1,000 to 1,500 people to be in attendance. The funds from this campaign will go directly into the hands of world class scientists that rapidly provide the advances needed to fight bladder cancer. We are requesting a monetary donation to our charity (preferred) or an item to be used in a charity raffle at the event. For monetary donations, we are planning to include companies on race communications and advertising, including on signage and t-shirt, as well as verbal recognition at the event. We need the T-Shirts finalized a month before the event, but other than that the sponsorship timing is flexible. Donations will influence the size of each logo on marketing materials. We are very flexible in regards to our sponsors, are open to working closely with sponsor companies and are interested in discussing additional opportunities!
Headquartered in New York, Pin Down Bladder Cancer is a 501(c)(3) registered charity dedicated to increasing public awareness of bladder cancer through the charitable, educational and scientific means and raising funds to support programs and organizations that conduct and/or promote bladder cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. In particular, Pin Down Bladder Cancer supports Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s bladder cancer Translational Science Program, which focuses on the development of early detection strategies to improve more timely diagnoses and a molecular characterization effort to identify critical pathways driving the growth of bladder cancer cells in order to develop new treatment methods.
Bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the U.S. with approximately 75,000 new cases diagnosed per year, 15,000 deaths per year and 600,000 people living with the disease. Due to its high recurrence rate of 50-80%, bladder cancer requires life-long surveillance and care, making it the most expensive cancer to treat on a per patient basis with an estimated $4 billion spent annually. Despite its prevalence, bladder cancer is severely underfunded versus other common cancer types, only ranking 21st on the list of cancers funded by the National Cancer Institute.
On a personal note, one of the event organizers, Melanie Strauss, was diagnosed with bladder cancer in April 2014 at the age of 25, although she didn't have any of the risk factors. She successfully completed surgery and treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering, but will continue to have follow up appointments for the rest of her life as bladder cancer has a high recurrence rate. She is dedicated to supporting the research efforts of this underfunded disease.
