World Golf Tournament,

United Kingdom United Kingdom

  • About the event

150 million golfers playing 1 billion rounds per year on 40 thousand courses worldwide… Does that sound an attractive market to tap in to? If your company could access this global audience, just think of the possibilities.

The World Golf Tournament (WGT) offers companies just that. As well as associating your business with an innovative new sporting event, you’ll have the potential of reaching an unparalleled community of golfers. How this golden opportunity is utilised for maximum mutual benefit is up to WGT and the sponsor in an active collaborative arrangement.

    How does the WGT work?

This tournament breaks the rules of how tournaments operate: it can be played on any golf course anywhere in the world and at any time.

To launch the inaugural World Golf Tournament campaign, 40,000 boxes with 500 tournament tickets are going out to the world’s golf courses, together with a welcome package in the sponsor’s name. Having bought the tournament ticket and played their round, the player will enter the result on the WGT website or app, including the required personal details. After a hundred players have entered their results, the winner will be announced on the website and newsletters will be sent out to the participants.

The winner will, at this early stage, have the honour of winning and will receive a golf shirt with the message:
“I won the [sponsor name] World Golf Tournament”.

Once 10,000 players have entered the tournament there will be a draw with hundreds of prizes from the sponsors.

How will the website work as an active marketing tool?

The WGT website employs the same functionality as Facebook, enabling its members to interact with each other. These connections and networks generate lucrative activity for both WGT and the sponsor alike. For sponsors, their brand, logo and marketing slogans are prominently displayed on the website and apps. At each stage, WGT works to provide the sponsor with opportunities to increase their brand awareness.

To generate additional web activity there will be a celebrity element where individual players can compare their standing with that of a celebrity golfer. In addition, there will be a Wall of Fame for the best players, best club, region and country.

    What makes WGT unique?

The World Golf Tournament breaks the traditional sponsorship model and reimagines it. Working in a more commercial way, it reaches out to the global golf community in a targeted way. At all times, the underlying ethos of WGT is to give sponsors great visibility and the potential to share in a huge global audience.

There are six sponsorship categories and, crucially, only one sponsor per category. These categories are:

    Financial
    Airlines
    Automotive
    Luxury brands
    Golf
    Telecoms

Each sponsor will have both the players and the golf clubs ‘on their side’. Players’ positive experience of the tournament will encourage them to become active recruiters of yet more members while the clubs, who keep 100% of the income from the ticket sales, will be keen to maximise their revenue meaning they will wish to promote the tournament. In essence, we’re saying that everyone’s a winner…

Accountability is vital for any business, of course, and each sponsor will be able to monitor and evaluate the financial impact of their sponsorship through the sales of tickets, club participation and clicks/hits on the website and apps. WGT will only invoice the sponsor for utilised sold scorecards and for actual web activity in the form of accumulated clicks/hits.
