About the event

Walk Together 2016 will be a huge celebration of diversity and a loud declaration that thousands  of  Australians  believe  we  can  become  a  nation  known  for  our compassion, generosity and welcome. 

Faced with increasing instances of fear and prejudice, it’s more important than ever for values of compassion and welcome to reign.
We share our future.

In its inaugural year in 2012, the Walk Together event was held in 10 cities with a turnout of over 10,000 people. In 2013 the event spread to 16 cities with a turnout of over 12,000 people and in 2014 spread to 20 cities and almost 20,000 people. In 2015, the event reached 29 cities! The event generates incredible opportunities for the celebration of diversity and we aim for it to be even bigger this year!

We believe an Australia is possible where prejudice is unpopular and cruelty hurts at the polls. An Australia that recognises the equality and dignity of all people - no matter who you are, where you’re from or how you arrived here – and extends our values of fairness and mateship to everyone. We dream of a nation that celebrates diversity, made up of communities where people of our First Nations, asylum seekers, refugees, international students, skilled migrants and every other human being can experience the joy and security of belonging.

The overall goals for the event are to provide an opportunity for individuals and organisations to express their belief in a welcoming, inclusive community, in a non-political way that celebrates diversity and the benefits it can give to our society.

The project aims to create a day where the overwhelming theme is one of welcome, compassion and inclusion and for this to be withheld in the public arena. Through the sharing of stories, music and dance we will celebrate the contribution that everyone makes to our community which will be visible evidence that we can all ‘walk together’ to change attitudes and influence the public conversation.
