On Saturday, September 10th, 2016, Autism Society San Diego will be holding our first annual Walk, Rock ‘N’ Roll for Autism Family 5K. We are a local, volunteer run non-profit, currently in our 50th year that puts on programs and events benefiting individuals with autism and their families here in San Diego County. This event will take place at Cal State San Marcos, with all proceeds benefiting our recreational programs, such as Camp I CAN (Camp Including Children with Autism Now), as well as our brand new Adult Summer Recreation Program. Camp I CAN is a unique opportunity for children with autism to participate in a traditional summer day camp experience, tailored to their special needs. We provide highly trained one to one staffing, and provide the children with opportunities to go out in the community and spend a week just focused on being a kid and having fun. For many of our participants, the experience can be life changing. As many of our participants are now adults, we are answering this need for new recreation programs with the start of our Adult Summer Recreation Program, which fulfills many of the same needs as Camp I CAN for our adult population.
The Walk, Rock 'N' Roll for Autism will take place on Saturday, September 10th, from 8 AM - 12 PM, at Cal State San Marcos. Participants can choose from a timed 5K, a 5K walk/run, or a 1K fun run! All proceeds fund recreational programs for autistic people in San Diego. Visit our resource fair, take part in some great family activities, get some delicious treats, and enjoy live music, all while raising money to support recreational programs for autistic people in San Diego County!

Autism currently affects 1 in 68 children. The need and demand for these programs grows every year. There is no better way to share with you the impact these programs have on our families than to share an actual letter from one of our families.
“My son has had the great experience of being at Camp I CAN for two years now. It has been a blessing. We made a cross-country move from Florida and it was a rough transition for all of us, let alone the kiddo with ASD. I was a little worried at first because I didn’t have any experience or friends’ feedback on Camp I CAN, but it has meant so much to all of us. My son feels included, welcomed, befriended and liked.that is priceless. It fills my heart with joy to see my kid chatter on about what he did and who he talked to about “Pokémon” cards or whatever else is popular at the moment. Camp I CAN gives my child a place to feel safe and bloom. I love that you have them out and about exploring new things every day. It gives me a little respite because I know he is safe. I know I won’t be getting a call for behavior problems or school issues. He gets to be an 11 year old boy, hanging out at camp, and I am so thankful. Just two weeks ago, another boy recognized my son, and gave a big wave and a smile as he said, “I know you, you went to Camp I CAN with me!” They then proceeded to walk and talk together...wonderful! Thank you to all of the sponsors of Camp I CAN and the great camp advisors. You have truly made a difference in my family’s life.”
Autism Society San Diego is committed to providing our programs at a very low cost or no cost for our families. The lifetime cost of raising an autistic child is over $3 million. Families often struggle with the many financial demands facing them. Autism Society San Diego never turns any individual away due to inability to pay. The Walk, Rock ‘N’ Roll for Autism is one of the many ways we raise the necessary funds to fulfill our goals and mission. Every contribution we receive helps changes lives for the better. Please consider contributing to this very important cause. Thank you for consideration of this request.
