********Good day ladies and gentlemen. It is with VERY EXCITING news that this year, the annual Trek for Tourette, Waterloo location, will be taking place at our very own St.Paul's Greenhouse on March 29 from 1pm-8pm at 190 Westmount Road North, Waterloo, ON. **************************

The Trek for Tourette will be held on March 29th, 2020 in most locations across Canada.

We Trek for Tourette in March; a 5-km walk in a month of unpredictable weather, as uncertain as the symptoms of Tourette syndrome itself. Locations from coast-to-coast pull out their muddy-day boots, not only for the awareness it brings, but also to fight for themselves and for the funds needed to keep Tourette Canada’s programs available in assisting them and their loved-ones.

Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics. It impacts 1% of the population. There is no cure. A tic is an involuntary movement, sound, or words that can be as simple as blinking or grunting to as complex as stomping and spinning or vocalizing entire sentences. Individuals with Tourette syndrome are misunderstood, told to stop, or even mocked. At Tourette Canada’s Trek for Tourette, a growing attitude of confidence and acceptance draws the community to hold signs saying, “We Tic Together” and to dispel misconceptions.

Tourette Canada has provided support across the country for 44 years. The Trek for Tourette is the only national fundraiser supporting programs and events to those with this complex disorder. With absolutely no government funding, the supportive donations provided through the community open the door to a third year of youth with Tourette attending “Camp sTiC Together,” or keep virtual peer support groups running for youth, adults and parents. In-Service Volunteers are able to be trained and vetted for visiting schools to promote understanding or to gain useful classroom strategies. With these needed finances, national Tourette syndrome conferences are made available to families and professionals alike. Our staff is kept running through these resources and they work to ensure awareness through awareness campaigns. One such example is the Light It Teal campaign in which major landmarks like the Winnipeg city sign, the Edmonton High-Level bridge, B.C. Place, Toronto’s CN Tower and even Niagara Falls are illuminated in teal; the colour associated with worldwide Tourette awareness.

To schedule an interview with one of our Trek Coordinators, or for further information on the disorder, the event, or Tourette Canada, please contact Simon Spencer, Communications Coordinator. We have affiliates in communities from coast to coast who would be happy to share their stories. Event images are available for media use by request. Send an email to *****@****.*** for any image needs.

About Trek for Tourette – Each year sees hundreds of ‘trekkers’ come together, wearing signature green toques and other green clothing on a day that averages single digits in some parts of the country, with potential weather ranging from rain, to snow, to sunshine. Participants trek through chilly community parks, along walking trails and down neighbourhood streets in support of the need for enhanced education, awareness and acceptance.

This year, Tourette Canada is proud to introduce new Treks to our roster in locations that have never had a Trek before, such as Simcoe County (Barrie), High River (Calgary) AB, and Kelowna (Okanagan) BC and Ottawa East (Orleans). Please see the full list of trek locations below.
