The Helpers Organization is a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit that assist the homeless and low income families of Hampton Roads by addressing the needs of affordable housing, economic development, and neighborhood revitalization. We provide free referral & case management services and financial assistance. We also have a Lunch On Us initiative, where, once a month, we use donated food items to prep and distribute sandwiches to homeless shelters around the seven cities.
T'is the season of giving! This December, we have tasked teams of area middle school students to use their knowledge, skills, and creativity to create Ginger Builds and present them to the public at Slover Library in Downtown Norfolk. The general public will vote for their favorite while a special panel of five judges will award 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize winners based on certain criteria. Teams who elect to have their gingerbread's auctioned, 80% of the proceeds returns to their school's PTA.
For the general public, the event will be free to view, but $2 per vote. Buy $10 and get the 6th for free. This is The Helpers Organization's fundraiser.
Funds raised from this event will be going towards The Helpers Organization’s Homeless Prevention Program. Launching in 2019, we plan to help the neediest of Hampton Roads families by keeping them within their homes by paying partial rents, mortgages and utilities, and provide services, such as tenant-landlord mediation.
Welcome to our 1st annual Great Ginger Build where we challenge local middle school students to create edible pieces of art inspired by 2018’s chosen holiday theme, Holiday by the Sea. In addition to helping families, we want students to flex their imagination in baking and explore different aspects of engineering (ie. structural, material), chemistry, math, and most importrantly teamwork.
Clearly, we don’t have a benchmark of how many people are expected to come to our event, but it will be around the same level as the 2017 Better Housing Coalition’s Gingerbread House Challenge in Richmond Virginia, where the competition drew over 2,000 people. Thanks to Slover Library, sponsors of this event will have the opportunity to be around a diverse mix of people.
Not only will you have a platform to showcase your business via a table, depending on your level of sponsorship, you will have other marketing opportunites and your business will be forever attached to:
My name is Tina Newbury and I'm the volunteer Chief Operating Officer for The Helpers Organization in Norfolk, Virginia. By day, I work full-time in the STEM industry as a web developer and by night/weekends I try to help others out, whether it's creating events, volunteering, and/or attending events. I've always been passionate about helping people, especially those who have fallen on hard times because I've personally been there before. I've worked on past events for The Helpers Organization, specifically securing space and sponsorship in the past, for our 2016 Fairy Tales Prom Event, where we helped 60 high school students find their prom dresses. I've also arranged a few Bingo Nights at different restuarants in City of Norfolk. All proceeds went back to The Helpers Organization.
