The Cro Magnon Theatre: Scream,

About the event

The Cro Magnon Theatre is excited to announce its first night of theatre. We will present our first theme: SCREAM @ The Nursery Theatre in Southwark from 31st of July until the 3rd August. We are accepting scripts on the topic Scream until the 6th June.

“The men I painted were all in extreme situation, and the scream is a transcription of their pain. Animals scream when they are frightened or in pain, so do children. But men are more discreet and more inhibited. They do not cry or scream except in situations of extreme pain. We come into this world with a scream and we often also die with a scream. Perhaps the scream is the most direct symbol of the human condition.” [Francis Bacon]

The Father of Neurology, Jean-Martin Charcot said a Scream is a ‘perfectly legitimate pathological phenomena, in which the will of the patient counts for nothing, absolutely nothing’. A scream is one of the more primal types of communication. It is reactionary and, as Charcot says, it is will-less. A scream can be imitated but when it is thoughtless it is pure action. We have chosen this theme precisely because its stands between our projects aim for greater thought in writing and the theatre as a ‘pathological phenomena, in which the will of the’ playwright ‘counts for nothing, absolutely nothing.’

The Cro Magnon Theatre is where our project comes to life, where the paintings on the Cave wall come to life, where the images of literature can be liberated from the-cage-of-the-page. It is moreover, where we stage the best scripts as submitted by you. We are looking for short plays with a run time of no more than 20 mins. If you are selected you will not only have your play performed, you will also be invited to write for our next theatre night.
