What is TED?
TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to tackle some of humanity’s toughest questions with creativity, enterprise and innovation all in under 18 minutes.
Ideas are the currency of the 21st Century. A TED talk can inspire an audience to take a deeper and more curious look at the world around them, and to share ideas with others. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design - three broad subject areas that are collectively shaping our future. Past speakers include Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Sir Richard Branson and also Bono.
What is TEDxWandsworth?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx, where x = local, self-organised TED-like events.
TEDxWandsworth is about celebrating what is great about Wandsworth. Created in the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading”, TEDxWandsworth events are designed to give our borough’s communities, organisations, and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through locally organised TED-like experiences.
At a TEDxWandsworth event there will be live speakers and performances that are curated by local organisers to spark deep discussion and connections between attendees, speakers and volunteers.
Where will TEDxWandsworth be held?
TEDxWandsworth will take place on Saturday 5th November at South Thames College in Wandsworth (10am – 6pm). The college was founded 1895 and has
seen substantial investment to meet the needs of students with state of the art facilities. We are passionate about promoting educational institutions as they are the bedrock of our community and society, and we are extremely proud and honoured to bring TEDxWandsworth 2016 back to South Thames College.
What happens at TEDxWandsworth? TEDxWandsworth is an event that will host 16 live talks and three live performances that strive to bring people together and create a neutral platform to spark ideas with attendees, speakers, partners and the organising team. TEDxWandsworth provides a platform, along with the opportunity to share ideas that we hope will give rise to the way people see and interact with the world around them. Each TEDx talk runs for 18 minutes (or less) and will have the power to open the minds of the audience, spark dialogue, and challenge the audience to transform ideas into action. The live performance slots give access to new and upcoming local talent as well as attract new audiences on TED YouTube channel.
Between the talks attendees get to share their ideas with others in a stimulating environment and our hope is that TEDxWandsworth will change the view of open-minded and curious individuals, and will inspire, connect, and shape a new world.

There is a movement of people who are engaged in discussing new ideas, and are putting ideas into action to improve our community. This movement is TEDxWandsworth. Back in November 2015, Amman Abid and Kalpana Chauhan launched TEDxWandsworth with the theme ‘Be the Change’ to a sold-out event at South Thames College. Sixteen speakers gave a TEDx talk across a variety of topics including science, education and the arts. The event was a huge success with the attendees rating TEDxWandsworth a Net Promoter Score of 83. TED granted a licence to continue TEDxWandsworth in 2016. The TEDxWandsworth talks on YouTube have generated over 20,000 views and counting as each day passes.
TEDxWandsworth 2016 is an independently organised TED event for up to 100 people operated as a not-for-profit. The TEDxWandsworth team is comprised of passionate local volunteers who dedicate their spare time to help organise the event. The team seek out the best and brightest minds to spark deep meaningful discussions from: scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, social activists and volunteers, all who come from all different backgrounds to give their ‘Perspective’ – our theme for 2016. Saturday 5th November marks the sophomore event of TEDxWandsworth and we are excited about the opportunities that are before us. We want to grow and evolve TEDxWandsworth to be the new platform where our participants can take the ideas they hear and put them into action. TEDxWandsworth is a community where the spark of an idea becomes a movement with purpose.
