A new study shows that African Americans, Latinos and other minorities still lag behind in preparation for continuing education in subjects leading to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. The study found that Latinos, females, and African Americans remain underrepresented in Advanced Placement (AP) exams for computer science.
Southwest MichiganYouthSpark is the only free Coding training program in our area.
We are a 501(c)3 Organization.
Inner cities have the greatest proportion of underrepresented young adults in technology (STEM) programs.
Southwest Michigan YouthSpark Inc. nonprofit is a start-up, Michigan based organization, designed to empower underrepresented communities in Southwest Michigan to become aware of the benefits of a technology education and the career opportunities created by gaining such knowledge.
With computer science slated to become all the more important by the year 2020, we are trying to break down the barriers for these underrepresented groups in the southwest Michigan area.
Our initial pilot project, which started with the help of Western Michigan University Division of Multicultural Affairs, with five (5) students, has already proven to be successful. Two of the five students that started the program are now enrolled at Western Michigan University’s Computer Science program and Engineering program.
We are also working with Dr. Steve Carr, chair and professor in the department of computer science. Students from the school help as mentors and classroom aids in our programs, “Coding for Elementary” (New Genesis Education Center, Kalamazoo, MI), and our Computer Coding Club at Hillside Middle School, Kalamazoo Public schools.
Our hands-on coding (computer programming classes) are innovative and use an integrated approach, determined by the needs of the communities we work in ensuring a relative and long-lasting experience. The spheres of community need we focus on are: technology education, leadership and entrepreneurship.
We are encouraging technology businesses to join us in our “Techmazoo”, Technology Fair and Hackathon. If we meet our goal, we can:
1) expand our current base to meet the needs of the Southwest Michigan communities.
2) begin to establish teams of trained volunteers / teachers to lead coding projects in these areas and,
3) continue conversation and planning with local community leaders about forthcoming initiatives. You can help us raise $10,000 by July 1st in one of the following ways:
