    Why should you sponsor?

CISV's Step Up encourages young people to take an active role in planning and organizing activities.

The participants and their adult leaders use CISV's education methodology to guide the theme of the camp around which they plan activities, such as identity, democracy, or environmental protection. The emphasis of the program is on youth leadership through adult facilitation. During this program, we will house and feed 50 people, as they participate daily in the types of cross-cultural programs, including deep and thoughtful de-briefing, on which CISV was founded.

This program is aligned with several key priorities, including strengthening links with local nonprofit organizations, supporting educational programs, and promoting youth development.

    An Interdependent World

In an increasingly cross-cultural world, misunderstandings can lead to conflict, instability and a growing sense of isolation. Today’s youth need positive interaction with peers from diverse ethnic, cultural, racial, and economic backgrounds. In order to positively impact the world, they need to know how to explore and value both differences and similarities. Exposure to different cultures, and international collaboration, results in individuals with a broader worldview. They learn to see things from different perspectives, develop understanding and tolerance, and develop the ability to make informed decisions and assume leadership roles. Youth who participate in a CISV Step Up acquire valuable skills that stay with them for life.

    About CISV

Founded in 1950 as Children’s International Summer Villages, CISV educates and inspires youth and their families to become active and contributing members of society - active global citizens. Our programs cover a wide range: international camps for ages 11 through adulthood, familyhosted exchanges, and local community-based projects. All are based on sound educational principles and objectives.

CISV programs provide participants with the Attitudes, Skills and Knowledge (ASK) to become agents of change, locally and globally. Featuring an experiential learning-by-doing approach, CISV seeks to stimulate the life-long development of effective collaboration, communication, and leadership skills. The focus is on developing personal and interpersonal knowledge about participants’ cultures and communities through group living and activities shared in an intercultural setting.

The four main content areas of CISV programs are:

    • Diversity - Explores the identity of the individual and then asks individuals to consider themselves within their own and the wider community.

    • Human Rights - Considers how human rights affect every aspect of participants’ lives and how violations can lie at the root of problems such as poverty, violence, and lawlessness.

    • Conflict and Resolution - Helps participants to understand how conflicts can arise deliberately or otherwise and what can be done to help bring about a peaceful resolution.

    • Sustainable Development - Looks for integrated ways to promote economic and social wellbeing, while protecting the environment through the responsible use of natural resources. Raising awareness of these issues opens the eyes of participants to opportunities for action in their home communities and the wider world and encourages them to become active global citizens.

CISV uses an experiential education model. Participants engage in activities, reflect on new understandings acquired from these activities, share what they have learned with each other, and connect what they have learned to life in their respective homes, communities, and the world.

    Rita Hussung

We have been involved in the local chapter of CISV since our youngest child was eleven.  At that time he traveled with CISV to participate in the month-long Village program with a group of four 11-year-olds from the area and an amazing young adult leader.

The experience was life-changing for him.  We saw first-hand what CISV is all about and how it can give a young person a true global perspective.

We have served as co-presidents for three years and have worked to increase the involvement of CISV in the local community.
