  • About the event

Startup Wales is a 48-hour weekend event in Cardiff, during which groups of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more pitch ideas for new startup companies, form teams around those ideas, and work to develop a working prototype, demo, & presentation by Sunday evening. The top ideas will then receive some great prizes to help take their idea to the next stage.

During the 48 hour event industry experts will be giving speeches and and providing advise to each team. 150 people are expected to take part in the main competition with tickets also available to those who would just like to view the event and get some experience of a startup weekend.

First Pitches held on Friday night; teams are formed and the event officially kicks off at 9pm. The event is taking place in Vale College which is in the Cardiff city center Location – a short walk from Cardiff Central train station.

Fantastic prizes will be given to the winning teams including: seed investment, coaching and capital introductions.

There will be two competitions taking place over the weekend:

The main competition is open for all to join. Entrants must come from a concept pitched on Friday night; anyone is free to pitch, and attendees will be able to vote on the venture that they’d most like to be a part of. During a brief polling break, votes will be tallied and the top 15-20 concepts will be allowed to progress to the main competition.

The other competition is an early stage pitch-off. This is for early stage startups within 1 year of incorporation, each team may be eligible for the Early Stage Pitch-Off competition held on Saturday. Up to 12 teams will be presenting their concepts and progress for a chance to win prizes ranging from access to mentor-ship and capital introductions.

The event is backed by the Welsh Government and other Welsh institutions and leading businesses including: Cardiff Start, Tech Dragons, and Business Wales.
