Spring Fling,

About the event

Our school staff are working very hard to change the climate and culture of our alternative learning environment in order to provide our students with a "high school experience". We are forming student organizations and teams, planning dances and spirit activities, and working with students to make the school feel like a high school for them. Our students come from many different walks of life and are at our school for a variety of reasons.

This event is run in conjunction with our Spring Carnival as an end of the year event to send students into the summer on a high note. We are seeking sponsorship in order to provide quality entertainment, refreshments, activities, and over all a fun event for our students. Our goal is to provide an event that attracts students and gives them a safe alternative to their weekend activities (which are not always the safest). We strive to do what is right for our students, and providing them with activities to keep them out of trouble or harm is important to us. We hope that you will join us in providing this space for our students to grow. We also know that creating a fun environment by having events and extra curriculars provides an outlet for our students and often leads to a sense of belonging and overall better performance in our school and in the community.

Why should you sponsor?

By sponsoring our event, you are showing our school community that there are people that care. Many of our students come to us out of significant trauma, and often don't feel valued, appreciated, or cared for. Sponsoring our event allows us to provide a safe activity for our students, provides a space for staff to further build trusting relationships with our students, and gives students an opportunity to connect with each other. These three componenents make for a better school climate, more students connections, and helps staff to be better able to support the needs of our students. 

Renee Bartholomew

I am the Student Government Advisor at McKinley Area Learning Center. Our school serves students from grades 9-12 in our district and neighboring communities. My role is to facilitate growth in the leaders who have joined Student Government and assist them in making our school what they want it to be -- which is simply enough a high school. Our school has had a bad reputation in the community as being the school for kids who can't succeed at regular high school, are in trouble with the law, or are generally bad kids. While these students can be challenging at times, they are amazing people. They work hard and put their mind to their goals. Students are getting involved in our school more than they ever have before, and our staff are working deligently to change the image of our school from the place where "bad kids" go to be an alternative high school setting for students who just learn differently. These kids are inspiring and deserve so much considering the backgrounds that many of them come from. These students have seen more in their years than I could imagine. They are strong and keep persuing their dreams even when nothing is going their way. I couldn't be happier working with this group of students, and I hope that you can feel the same joy by sponsoring our event and helping out students.
