  • About the event

It takes vision to see the big picture.

An afternoon of talks from four speakers whose ideas are at the forefront of digital learning culture. This event is an invitation to draw a breath of fresh air above the minutiae and focus on the big ideas. Join other leaders at Spark and catch your breath.

    Dr. Mimi Ito

Research Director, Chair of Digital Media and Learning, Professor in Residence; MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Hub, University of California, Irvine

    Connected Learning for Digital Youth.
Today’s technologies offer new ways of supporting learning that is engaging, connected to the wider world, and tailored to specific interests and learning styles. Young people often go online for informal and interest-driven learning but, unfortunately, with few connections back to school and academic subjects. Dr. Mimi Ito is a cultural anthropologist of digital culture and an advocate of learning that is youth-centered, interest-driven, hands-on and social; in this talk she will present connected learning as an approach toward realizing educational goals.

    Michael Armstrong

Principal, Educational Consultant; Bugg Creative Arts and Science Magnet Elementary School

Paving the Road for Pivotal Transitions.
When there’s a new principal in charge it makes everyone nervous. As school leaders, there are things we can do in the first days to honor the past, dream for the future, and focus on the present. Principal and educational consultant Michael Armstrong is committed to researching, testing and implementing best practices to transition school leaders, and this fall he will be sharing his research and personal experience at Spark.

    Jennie Magiera

Chief Technology Officer; Des Plaines Public School District 62

Inner City Innovation: Taking Risks in High Risk Situations.
There are great stories of innovation happening in education, but too rarely are these coming from public schools serving high needs communities. The educators dedicated to these schools often shy away from taking risks as they must dedicate their focus toward many other challenges. In this talk, Jennie Magiera will show educational leaders at Spark that high risk situations like these actually call for us to take the biggest risks of all.

    Dr. Jordan Shapiro

Professor, Associate Director for Digital Innovation; College of Liberal Arts at Temple University

Education Is Changing; Can You Keep Up?
School prepares children to be the adults of the future. But at a time when so much is changing so rapidly, we can barely guess how the future will look. New technological, economical and intellectual paradigms are changing what we need to learn. In this talk, internationally renowned speaker Dr. Jordan Shapiro will address the concerns of educators, administrators and policy makers challenged with identifying effective educational systems and pedagogical structures for new paradigms.

    Envision the future of education.

Four world-class talks on education, technology and leadership, on November 13th, 2015 at the Kennedy School in Portland, Oregon.
