The Soulful Chicago Book Fair is our way of renewing excitement around literacy and literary arts in the Black community. July 16, 2017 will feature four blocks of literary power, with over 100 Black authors and literary organizations including: An "Honoring Our Elders," opening procession, blocks categorized by genre, storytelling, youth essay contest prizes, jazz & soul performances, house music, a New Author Tribute Ceremony, participating author commercials, literary workshops, spoken word performances, entertainment by Grammy-level entertainment & more!
2016 was the event's inaugural year with approximately 3000 visitors! 2017 anticipates a crowd of near 5000 - 7000 people, given its broad grassroots outreach and weekly radio programming,
Sponsors should support the Soulful Chicago Book Fair as it is the only event of its kind in Illinois and perhaps even the nation. From hand-selected Black authors, to literary workshops, blocks organized by genre, to literacy resources, this event draws audiences that live in "cultural book deserts." As a result, a sponsor can assure great exposure to thousands of people willing to support entities that support them back.
Asadah Kirkland, author of the book Beating Black Kids and Founder of the Soulful Chicago Book Fair has been a part of the literary industry for over 20 years. In 2009 Asadah wrote her book, forging a crusade to end corporal punishment in America. She has appeared on CNN, Al Jazeera America, ABC’s “Here & Now,” Essence.com and New York Parenting Magazine. In 2014, Asadah returned to Chicago with the sum total of her literary expertise, bringing to life, The Soulful Chicago Book Fair.
