About the event

SONGKRAN: is a term derived from the Sanskrit word, sankrānti and used to refer to the traditional New Year celebrated in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, parts of northeast India, parts of Vietnam and Xishuangbanna, China. It begins when the sun transits the constellation of Aries, the rst astrological sign in the Zodiac, as reckoned by sidereal astrology. It is related to the equivalent Hindu calendar-based New Year festivals in most parts of South Asia which are collectively referred to as Mesha Sankranti. In Thailand Songkran celebrations are held in almost every part of the country.

Songkran Festival in Thai Town Los Angeles is the most notable celebration. The festival attracts over two hundred fifty thousands of visitors each year according to the LAFD attendance records. It starts with a Parade and a Daily Prayer, Cultural Dance Performances, Our Famuos Beauty Pageant, Fashion Show, Culinary Show presented by world renowned Thai Chefs, Muay Thai Competition, Live Music, Beer Garden, Thai Gifts, Traditional Thai Art Effect Exhibition, Thai Wedding Ceremony, Ice Sculpture, Fruit and vegetable Carving Show, Beverage and Food Stalls and more.

AUDIENCE: We are anticipating the attendees to reach over three hundred thousands in 2018 as our audience have grown over the past twelve year. We have great number of local residents, event-goers, tourist visitors, out-of-town visitors, even out of the country visitors. Based from our survey, the age ranges are young children (5%), 20-39 (45%), 40-49 (25%), 51 and up (20%). With 51% male and 49% female.

With The backing of The Royal Thai Consulate, the Tourism of Thailand, Thai Bank, Singha Thai Beer, Thai Airways, and sponsorship from local American owned Corporation. Songkran Fest 2018 is our 13th Annual Songkran Event. The street closure is made possible by the city of los angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and many branches of local government in participation.
