Someone Else's Road: an online soap opera,

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

  • About the event

My name is a Paul Richards; I am a professional comedy writer/performer based in Cambridge. I am full-time at this, having quit the 9-5 job in November 2014 to really give my ambitions the time and energy I feel they deserve. Experience includes 14 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, constant touring and I am a regular on Cambridge TV.

I am soon to launch my most ambitious project to date: a 50-episode YouTube soap opera. It will launch on 5th July, and will run twice a week right up until the big Christmas finale. Each episode will be 10 minutes in length, apart from the series closure which will be a longer conclusion to the story.

I appreciate this probably sounds ambitious enough as it is, but to add to that - the whole series will be made entirely on my smartphone. Last year I made a film on my mobile, 50 Ways to Leave Your Drummer (in which I got sacked by 50 bands - those to have 'fired' me include Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull, John Otway, Heaven 17, Nik Kershaw, Graham Parker and comedian Arthur Smith) and the movie eventually premièred to huge success at the Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge, where it was a sell-out. I'm a strong believer in mobile technology and I also really enjoy the creative challenge of everything being filmed on just one tiny device.

The soap itself is called, 'Someone Else's Road' and, although technically set in Cambridge, won't be a 'Cambridge soap opera' as such as I'm always wary, certainly from a career perspective, of anything that restricts a project to being local. Filming will take place throughout April/May, with editing in June ahead of the launch.

I'm a former journalist so I should be able to generate a fair amount of media attention, we'll also go social media crazy on it and create a bit of a buzz. The aim, naturally, is for the soap to build it's own loyal audience - every episode will remain on the YouTube channel forever, but obviously we want viewers to get excited about the next forthcoming episode, as we'll set them to go live consistently at the same time every week.

This is a really exciting project and naturally we are seeking sponsorship for it. In return for your potential generosity we can offer your logo at the start of every episode, as well as in the end credits, on all social media and on the website.

    Why should you sponsor?
