Hi my name is Ashley Grant and I am currently attending Miramar High School 2015-2016. I would like to host an event more specifically a carnival for all the chronic ill children at my school. The idea came to me while thinking about ideas for a personal project that I have to do at my school (IB project, I'm a IB student). I wanted to start a non-profit organization called Smile that focused on improving the lives of chronically ill children. I did not realize how much more work and time it takes to start one, so I decided to put that idea on hold for now. I still wanted to do something for the children so I decided to have a carnival, what better way to make the kids smile and be filled with enjoyment and laughter. With the help of the sponsors I help that I can make this dream of mine come true.
The video above is not mine nor do I have any relations to it. But it does showcase exactly what I would love to do for the children at my school the type of energy and judgement free zone that is going on in the video is what I hope to accomplish. Since this will be my first time doing this event I do not have any media to show, but the video above definitely showcases what I would love to do but in a carnival theme type way.
I do not have my own non-profit/organization so I am doing everything under Key Club ( service programs for high school students) and Key Club members will have the opportunity to volunteer for hours at the event. I already turned in all my forms (project approval form and timeline sheet) to my school's bookkeeper, now the only thing left to do is to receive enough donations in order to get this event started.
What: I am trying to organize a small carnival that has bounce houses, carnival games, interactive and competitive games as well. It will also have food, music and arts/crafts.
Who:All the mentally and physically disabled children at Miramar High School
Why:Children that are chronically ill and disabled (physical & mentally disabled), go through life feeling different, scared and ostracized by society. Smile is a non-profit organization focused on improving the life of these kids, we want to bring joy and laughter to those children. Help them feel like they are not burden but a blessing, help them know that because they are different does not mean that they are incapable of doing things. We will offer a yearly carnival for the children that are chronically ill and disabled. The carnival will consist of accessible rollercoaster, entertainment, games that will foster mental growth and development and good food.
Chronic condition is when somebody’s has an illness or disease that has a frequent recurrence, it could be considered a chronic illness if it lasts more than 3 months. About 18% of children in the United States are living with a chronic illness and all of those children experience regular hospital visits. A lot of these children go through treatments that are painful, while having to stay in a lonely boring hospital. The number of chronic ill children in the United States is increasing, so creating an environment where kids can feel safe while having fun is very important. This carnival will focus on building up self image/independence and other skills that are lacking within children that are chronically ill; this is supported by articles on children that are chronically ill. This carnival will be targeting children that are chronically ill and lack the ability to live a normal life.
