Peace Brigades International UK and the “Alliance of Lawyers at Risk” are planning an event focused on ‘Shakespeare and the Law’, to be held at the Elizabethan Middle Temple Hall on 16th November 2015, where Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night was first performed in 1602. The evening will explore the universality of human rights and the vital role that human rights defenders play in upholding the rule of law, with a Shakespearean theatrical twist. Featuring readings from Shakespeare on justice and the law from the Merchant of Venice, King Lear, Richard II and other plays, readings will be given by Sheila Hancock, Juliet Stevenson, Samuel West and Alex Jennings. Drinks and nibbles will be accompanied by music from the Royal College of Music.
The event will be of particular interest to the legal community and those interested in the protection of human rights, as well as theatre-lovers! Through the support of those who come to it we hope to raise funds to enable the Alliance for Lawyers at Risk and PBI UK to develop capacity building programmes in Kenya and Nepal in support of lawyers and other human rights defenders, and also to raise funds to support our international volunteer observers’ programmes in Colombia, Mexico and Guatemala.
