About the event

STRIVE, San Diego!, a project of Operation Samahan’s San Diego Asian Pacific Islander Community Health Network, is a coalition of various community-based agencies and businesses committed to addressing API health disparities in San Diego and improving the API community voice. The network is pleased to announce its annual San Diego Asian Pacific Islander event on September 16, 2017, Saturday, 10:00 AM TO 3:00 PM at the Luce Court and Legacy Plaza (2641 Truxton Rd. San Diego, CA 92106).

STRIVE San Diego! is part of a select group of community-based organizations funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Community Health (DCH), to reduce health disparities in Asian and Pacific Islander communities through the design and implementation of a high impact program. Having a healthy and balanced diet has important benefits to a person’s health and can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

The SDAPI Culinary Fusion Festival is a showcase of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) cuisine from local restaurants in San Diego that have been modified to give our diners a healthier and delicious option. Guests will have an opportunity to try these dishes and be entertained by various local talent that represent our diverse culture from traditional dances to modern exercise using fast-paced techniques. A food demonstration will also take place to show how popular Asian dishes can be transformed into nostalgic, healthier alternatives. In celebration of culture and diversity, the event is also a call to action by bringing awareness to chronic diseases, which affect many of our patients at Operation Samahan that can be prevented by healthy eating and active living.

Hello!

My name is Antonio Salang. I am a project coordinator for the Non-Profit Health Clinic, Operation Samahan. I specialize in Health Promotion and have been working with the community for two years. I was an intern for the non-profit before getting hired while I was trying to learn the ropes. I found a rich cultural value and tradition working with the organization and the programs it provides tot eh community.

My goal is to shed light on the health disparities of Asians and Pacific Islander's, specifically to nutrition. With our partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I have been able to use their resources to go inside different neighborhoods of San Diego County and listen to their stories.

I hope you find my bio interesting. The work we do here is very rewarding and we hope we can translate that to you as well.
