Building a sense of community is no longer an option. It is the moment when we all come together, or we fall.
But, what do we mean when we say "community"? Are we talking about changing demographics? Walls? Disparities? Communication? Equity? Social Justice? Is it a powerful tool for solving problems? Is it a call to arms? A movement?
How can developing a sense of community help a school address the "Big Issues" like achievement gaps, disaffected youth, and lack of engagement? Is it a way to generate dissonance, discussion and debate? Is it how we bring together? Is it how we encourage random acts of kindness?
NPLI 2017 will inform and inspire teams as they propose specific ways to build a sense of community in their schools and neighborhoods, towns and cities.
