  • About the event

Building on the achievements of the SBA 1.0 and 2.0 conferences held in 2021 and 2023, SynBio Africa is set to organize the SBA 3.0 International Synthetic Biology, AI, and Biosecurity Conference in Nairobi, Kenya from July 17 to 19, 2024. This three-day event aims to bring together more than 300 participants, fostering connections among industry professionals, researchers, academics, communities, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the fields of synthetic biology and biosecurity in Africa. The conference will serve as a platform to assess the current advancements since the previous gatherings and strategize on the way forward for the progress of these critical domains on the continent.

Synthetic biology involves the creation and modification of biological components, devices, and systems for practical purposes, including the redesign of existing natural biological systems. Since the inaugural Synthetic Biology and Biosecurity Conference in Africa in October 2021, there has been a surge of activities in these fields at Synbio Africa and throughout the continent. These activities encompass the introduction of new training and certification programs in synthetic biology and biosecurity, partnerships for vaccine production, the approval of policies supporting synthetic biology's contribution to the bioeconomy, the expansion of SynBio companies, the emergence of biotech startups, and the establishment of regional networks for pandemic preparedness. These noteworthy developments, to be highlighted at the upcoming conference, are the result of collaborative efforts spanning various sectors and technical domains. The conference's objective is to further cultivate a well-defined role for synthetic biology in fostering national, regional, and continental sustainable development.

SBA 3.0 Conference seeks to bring together stakeholders from industry, academia, community, and policy makers in Africa, spotlight useful Synbio application areas, and foster networking and information sharing between stakeholders across Africa and beyond. Discussions during the conference also seek to address the different areas that are of greater concern like biosecurity and increase synthetic biology visibility in Africa.

The conference program will include Keynote talks, oral presentations, lightning talks, breakout sessions, panel discussions, and networking sessions.

Six thematic areas will be covered in this conference:

    1.    Agricultural innovations,

    2.    Bioinformatics and AI,

    3.    Biosecurity and Biosafety,

    4.    Renewable Energy and Materials,

    5.    Biomaterials Science, Biosensors and Diagnostics.

    6.    One Health.
