About the event
A series of Red Carpet Gospel Concerts beginning in February (Black History Month) and hosted to generate capital to produce a feature film about “Tent City,” the true story of one of the first African American voter registration drives that took place in Fayette County, TN.
Tent City covers the series of civil rights events that took place in Fayette County, Tennessee, from 1959 into the early 1970s. As a result, many black residents were evicted from the sharecropper housing that had been homes to some families for generations. Ultimately, up to 700 people had to move into one of two Tent Cities erected on donated land, some living there for up to 2+ years. Documentaries and even a book, “Our Portion of Hell: An Oral History of the Civil Rights Movement in Fayette County, Tennessee” (Links Books: NY, 1973) has been written about Tent City, but no one has tackled a feature film… until NOW, with your help, of course. The movie and moreover, the Tent City movement in and of itself, offer a special opportunity to understand how communities can overcome difficult pasts and remind us that these human rights issues continue, and remain urgent in national and global discussions.
