After taking a break in 2014, Newark Blues Festival will be back bigger and better than ever in 2015, over the weekend of Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September. Having already received over three hundred applications from bands wishing to perform at the festival, we are hoping to see upwards of fifty bands playing over the weekend at venues around Newark, including our Main Stage in the historic Newark Castle Grounds.
As a not-for-profit organisation, Newark Blues Festival is organised by a committee of volunteers whose aims are to:
1) Raise the profile of Newark on Trent and attract people to the area; benefiting the town and local businesses.
2) Promote live Blues music.
3) Encourage participation in live music within younger generations.
4) Provide a platform for local artists to perform and promote themselves.
We achieve these aims by attracting hundreds of visitors to the town each year over the festival weekend and keeping them entertained, alongside thousands of Newark locals, with an extensive programme of free live music in the town’s fantastic pubs, as well as two full days of national touring blues artists in Newark Castle Grounds.
We also host free to attend workshops for musicians under eighteen years old. These workshops are lead by professional musicians and teachers to ensure a great experience for the young people involved. After learning about special techniques involved in playing the Blues, they’re given the chance to take the stage and perform as a band in Newark Castle Grounds. For many of these young people, this is their first experience of playing live as a band and year after year we are told by children and parents what a great experience our workshops have offered.
This year will be the sixth Newark Blues Festival and since our establishment in 2009, we’ve been nominated for the Best Festival Award at the British Blues Awards four times, finishing as runner up in 2012. With the help of our supporters and local businesses, we hope to gain even higher levels of recognition in 2015.
