The Ryerson Somali Association feels the need to have a meet & greet as the first event . This familairzies the students with the in a way the students are able to have an understanding what we are made of and what are our goals are throughout the school year. The fundamental reason for this event is for us to network amongst the Somali community right here in Ryerson University. The key reason for this event is to support students and provide a positive space where the students can feel comfortable to come to us (the executive board members) for advice or a way support one another. As matter of fact during the event we were trying to find successful Somali individuals to share their experiences and what trials and tribulations they have encountered to be where they are now. A couple speakers that we are pursuing to get for the event will be the well-known singer K’naan, two Somali entrepreneurs that started their own business in which they are their own workers bosses.
Lastly, the final speaker will be a Ryerson Alumni, a civil engineer & an entrepreneur who felt the need to give back to her country by opening a Dollarama in Somalia. We decided to have the Meet & Greet in the Okama Café lounge because the atmosphere is inviting and friendly. The event will approximately go for about three hours from 5:00 till 9:30, in which there will be a break in between where students can interact and get to know each other. . The last thirty minutes would dedicated to clean up and the first hour is for set up. Regarding the cost, we are trying to spend a maximum of hundred and fifty dollars put towards the food which will consist of appetizers. A fraction of the money will also go towards the decoration. The event is not restricted to only Somali students, however, it is open to every student at Ryerson University. As a result, this association can be used to unite students who share the same ethnicity and also welcome students of other ethnicities and backgrounds to show diversity amongst the Ryerson University.
