Kilkenny prepares for battle! Kilkenny provides the historic backdrop for Ireland’s first Medieval Marathon. On September, the 17th, participants will set off from the grounds of Kilkenny Castle at 2pm. The route will take in some of the most historic sites in the city before winding out the country roads, making its way back to Kilkenny to finish on The Parade in the heart of the city. The city will also play host to a 30k, half marathon and 10k, with all participants arriving back at The Parade on Saturday evening to the sounds and smells of a medieval banquet. All finishers will be rewarded with a bespoke medal and technical t-shirt to celebrate the battle victory! For more information, see Facebook page: Medieval Marathon

This is the first year of this event which we see growing to been one of Irelands most popular events nationally and internationally. Medieval Marathon will be supporting local charities and local sports clubs so not alone would you be supporting us but the local community
Vincent GuthrieThe Medieval Marathon will take place for the first time in Kilkenny City on Saturday, September 17th 2016. It is anticipated that this will become a major annual event with runners expected to travel from far and wide to complete the marathon in Kilkenny's medieval city.
Over the next few years, the route will evolve to showcase some of the jewels in the crown of Kilkenny, in particular Kilkenny Castle and Parade Plaza, St Francis Abbey, the Riverside Garden and some of the pedestrian bridges across the Nore.
The expected number of runners for this year will be 500 to 1000, ensuring a safe, enjoyable run for all participants and allowing the organisers to build for future years.
The event has gained significant support from Ireland’s biggest online marking platform, RunIreland.com who will assist in the positioning and promotion of the event both nationally and overseas.
The marathon will be themed in the medieval style using signage, costumes and fires and finishers will even enjoy “pig on the spit” food on the Parade plaza to celebrate reaching the finish line. The event should prove to be a spectacle of medieval theatrics and a celebration of Ireland's Ancient East!A half marathon event of 13.1 miles, a 30k and a 10k will be run alongside the full 26.2 mile event.
