The Longview Halloween Glow Classic is a fun introduction to the sport of disc golf for those who play the sport, those who have been interested in the sport, but never played, and those who have never heard about the sport. The event has a Halloween theme and consists of two rounds of 18 holes of disc golf. The first round is played during the day so new players can get an idea of how the course is laid out. The second round is played after dark with basket lights and lit tee pads and disc that are illuminated or that glow.
The basis of the event is for people to have fun, get outside and do something, and encourage people to try something new, specifically disc golf. This event isn't geared towards the hard-core touring professional disc golfer (though they are always welcome). It is geared towards the community members who might not know about disc golf, and want to get out and do something fun for Halloween.
This event pulls in all kinds of people from the local community as well as up to 100 miles away in all directions. Last year, we had people from Puyallup, Washington down to Salem, Oregon attend the event. We were able to introduce them to a number of brands and businesses they would have not otherwise been aware of, and many of those business reported positive feedback due to the event.
This event supports health and wellness in the local community as well. It gives local businesses a chance to promote getting up, getting out, and doing something physical, healthy, and fun. It is a great group event that gives people a chance to meet new people, interact, and get away from TV and Computer Screens for a little bit of time.
Michael Palmer is going on his second year of running this event, as well as helping organize and run a number of other disc golf related events in the Cowlitz County area. In 2015, he helped run a disc golf league for 25+ people throughout the summer, and then put together the first Longview Halloween Glow Classic event. In 2016, he has organized a school demonstration of disc golf for the Junior High class of St Rose Parish School, as well as started a disc golf organization (Cowlitz County Disc Golf Association) and a league while also planning a disc golf tournament and helping to organize Dynamic Discs' Chasin the Chains tour coming to the Longview, Washginton area.
He is passionate about sharing the sport with others, while also getting people out and using their local parks and disc golf courses. Michael has donated time and disc golf equipment to schools and new players all in an effort to encourage people to try the game and get out and play just a bit more.
