Life with M.E. - Facing Discrimination and Neglect from the Medical Community ,

London, United Kingdom London, United Kingdom

  • About the event

Every day, thousands of people living with the condition known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or M.E. must face a devastatingly cruel existence. Painful muscles, cognitive dysfunction, mental and physical exhaustion and fatigue, light, sound and touch sensitivity, debilitating migraines and flu-like symptoms are just some of the elements of this insidious condition, restraining most to a life in bed, where they must continually fight for power over their own bodies.

But where nearly all illnesses, diseases and disabilities in the UK have treatment to help manage, M.E. does not, and is not classified in the NHS as a candidate for funding, leaving well over 250,000 people without medical assistance. Not only this, but trips to the doctor often result in overwhelming discrimination and neglect, where patients are frequently told that their condition is "all in their head" or "does not have any possible treatments", two highly damaging lies. Some are even laughed at and openly mocked.

In severe cases, M.E. can result in death, leaving those left behind wondering if they will be its next victims while the medical community watches on. Depression caused from the extreme circumstances of living with M.E. has also led to countless suicides, people of all ages feeling they cannot face this uncertain future.

But all this must and will change. As part of its campaign for expansion of funding and treatment to be made readily available to those living with M.E., Change For M.E. Change For Us is embarking on a short film about discrimination and neglect in the medical sphere, asking people in the midst of it what it really feels like to have no hope and no help from those who are hired to do the exact opposite.

While we have our volunteers who are raring to go, Change For M.E. Change For Us is an independently run campaign with no outside funding. As such, we are seeking partnerships with those who truly care about change and health reform to help finance this small, but important venture, and to make a difference to the world they live in.

    Thank you.
