STEM subjects (Science, Techonology, Engineering and Mathematics) have been traditionally thought of as heterosexual, masculine fields and the thought of this can be quite intimidating for those just starting out in the field who don’t fit this mold. The LGBT STEM project ( https://lgbtstem.wordpress.com/ ) showcases LGBT people in the STEM fields, showing the diversity of people that can be found in roles all across the STEM disciplines and providing role models for people who are at a junior stage in their careers. As part of this project and in keeping with these goals, we are holding a one-day conference in 2016.
The LGBT STEMinar will be held at the University of Sheffield on the 15th January. The conference will be a one day event running from 9am to 7pm. It will involve two 45 minute talks and approximately 14 short talks (12 minutes). There will be 3 coffee breaks, a lunch time session and a drinks reception for networking.
The conference is designed for people who work or study in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and identify as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans*). We will have attendees from Universities, Industry, Small businesses and Freelancers.
We aim to use the day to show case work from diverse fields and to encourage collaborations between different departments, Universities, companies and subjects. We also welcome those who may not identify as LGBT but wish to discover and support the work that LGBT people are doing.
