My name is Katharina Wells. I have been a dedicated Girl Scout for the past 8 years and revel in opportunities to volunteer in my community. I have recently been afforded a life-changing opportunity and am looking to be sponsored. Sponsorships, as we all know, can make enormous and amazing things happen and can make a real impact on the world. Should my cause be sponsored, it will be doing exactly that!
I have been accepted to a Loop Abroad program based on my academic record, references, and demonstrated interest in giving back and learning about leadership.
Loop Abroad provides small, focused travel programs that allow motivated high school students to experience other cultures and give back while learning about real-world problem solving. Their programs are a life-changing experience where students can build leadership skills, question their beliefs, and work toward discovering what it takes to make a real impact on the world.
Through readings, workshops, discussions, and hands-on activities, I hope to learn all about a new culture and develop some new skills. My trip is certainly about giving back, but it’s also about expanding my horizons and experiences. I feel honored to have the chance to travel and study with an organization that works with and supports the Elephant Nature Park, the Save Children in Asia Organization, the Somaly Mam Foundation, Pour un Sourire d’Enfant, the Serengeti Foundation, and the Karen hill tribes of Northern Thailand. I would be volunteering in both the Elephant Nature Park and the Animal Rescue Kingdom. At ENP I’ll work with the elephants, helping to feed them, bathe them, cut their food, clean their homes, and provide overall care for them. I will also help with sanctuary upkeep and have the chance to participate in cultural activities.
Of course the trip is not only beneficial to these magnificent organizations; it benefits my future as well. I plan to be a veterinarian and with this opportunity I’d be able to get hands on experience with veterinary medicine by helping neuter/spay cats and dogs, shadowing a veterinarian, and providing medical care to injured elephants in the Elephant Nature Park. A few things I’d learn are restraining and taking blood from animals, giving injections/shots, and develop good suture techniques.
Wonderful opportunities like this are rare and often accompanied by a sizable price tag... this trip is no exception. The overall cost for this trip comes out to just below $7,000. My goal is to surpass that amount! Every single dollar over the minimum to fund my trip will go to the aforementioned organizations to support their causes and ensure they can continue their efforts to make a change.
