Hello,
My name is Niloy Chakravarty, a representative of the Indian Cultural Association (ICA) at UT Austin. We would like to request financial support of $1,000.00 for our event, Jhalak 2015, held at Hogg Memorial Auditorium at 6 PM on Saturday, November 14, 2015.
I would like to give some background about our organization, ICA. We are a student-run organization at The University of Texas at Austin working to enhance the cultural diversity present at UT. Over the years, we have grown from our humble beginnings to become one of the biggest socio-cultural organizations on campus, with an active member count of 120 and the recipient of the Swing Out Award for Best Cultural Organization in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and the recipient of the Swing Out Award for Most Improved Organization in 2014. In addition to Jhalak, our main Bollywood fusion dance competition for which we are seeking funding, we also hold several cultural functions (i.e. Rasoi, our monthly Indian food stall on West Mall) and community service events (i.e. Benefit Bazaar, a weeklong service event hosted in
partnership with other South Asian organizations). The purpose of ICA is to spread awareness about Indian culture through a variety of events that engage the community both at the University and in the greater Austin area. In terms of membership, our organization consists of a central executive board and an active committee. The active committee plays an integral role in ICA, helping the executive board organize and promote ICA’s events.
We are proud to present our signature event, Jhalak 2015. This event features the top Bollywood fusion dance teams from all over the United States as part of the 2015 Bollywood America dance circuit, facing off in the largest Bollywood fusion dance competition in the South. Showcasing the talents of both the teams competing on the national Bollywood dance circuit and a wide variety of UT dance teams representing the various forms of traditional Indian dance, Jhalak 2015 is a night to be remembered. The Indian Cultural Association’s goal is to introduce and spread awareness of the Indian culture to the entire UT Austin student body, and Jhalak is our biggest push of the year towards this goal. Jhalak's purpose is to unite people of different ethnicities (meaning all students and groups are welcome to come), showcase India’s unique cultural values, and educate both the UT community and Central Texas as a whole about the rich culture of India through one of the most inspiring means: dance.
To recognize the University’s contribution to our event, we recognize all UT-affiliated sponsors on our handbills, flyers, banners, T-shirts, websites, and social media accounts, in order to thank them for their support and provide them with exposure to our nationwide audience. If we receive $1,000, we will use this money to pay for the various Jhalak 2015 products our participants will receive. Since the teams come from across the nation to Austin, we welcome them to UT Austin by providing Jhalak merchandise (i.e. backpacks, speakers, towels, and wristbands) as a sign of hospitality from us. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like more information regarding a sponsorship.
Sincerely,
Niloy Chakravarty
