: Immigration debated by former state Sen. Deborah Ortiz and California GOP Representative Forum sponsored by American Legion High School students
Prominent area proponents and opponents of immigration reform—including President Obama’s recent executive action protecting as many as five million undocumented immigrants from deportation—will debate the controversial topic at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, during a forum sponsored by students at American Legion High School in Oak Park. It is part of their civic engagement and community service debate series, “The Advocate.” The debate falls on the 22nd anniversary of civil rights and farm labor leader Cesar Chavez’s death.
Oak Park native Deborah Ortiz, the former California legislator and current Los Rios Community College District trustee will face off against a California GOP representative (TBA) before an audience of American Legion High School students who will gain valuable experience managing and operating their public debate forum.
The debate helps raise funds for students’ transportation needs, including buss passes, which help the students participate in community-service learning projects, supplying actual job experience for these residents in low-income neighborhoods where 25 percent of young African Americans and 15 percent of young Latinos are unemployed.
A previous debate pitted then-Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinnis against a retired Orange County judge over Proposition 19, a statewide marijuana initiative. Future forums will tackle other issues such as the strong-mayor proposal and local school policy matters.
In addition to the President’s executive action, the debate will touch upon comprehensive immigration reform, including guest worker programs, border security and earning legal residency and citizenship. Through participation in the public debate forum, youth obtain valuable experience, perform a community service and help promote student interest in college and expanded pathways to Sacramento’s workforce.
Anthony Chavez, grandson of Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW), will participate in the program as the liaison for the Cesar Chavez Foundation, providing historical background of Immigration issues for students, speaking to them in the classroom about the issue, and also to promote community service amongst our crossover youth at American Legion, a continuation high school for young people from traditionally neglected low-income family neighborhoods; most of whom currently are involved with the juvenile justice systems.
KCRA Channel 3 shall moderate the event. KCRA Channel 3 recognized the “Advocate” debate series with a media award (awarded to nonprofit event programming) for our Prop 19 debate in April 2010.
The “Advocate” debate series and the event itself is utilized as a civic engagement and community service-learning tool that provides opportunities for “crossover youth” to obtain actual job experience working on a community service project, as part of their health education and workforce development program “My Brothers’ Keeper” project.
