  • About the event

Live Original Music + Handmade & Homegrown Markets - October 29, 2016 - Billabong Park, Kooralbyn QLD

    The Festival:

Homespun Bazaar is 12 hour music festival incorporating market stalls focused on handmade and homegrown goods, with emphasis on arts, entertainment from other artforms and music industry workshops. Its goal is to provide an accessible music, arts and cultural experience to those less able to be involved in this type of event due to geographic and socio-economic restrictions.

Homespun Bazaar was created from a community need to have a positive event in the area. Kooralbyn is a small rural town which, because of its history, lacks resources and therefore any events or cultural experiences for its residents. There are many artists and culturally gifted people within the area who are equally lacking in resources to showcase their work.

The festival fulfills several goals for the region. While arts activities are welcomed and sought in the area, there is a lack of knowledge in metropolitan circles as to the opportunity which exists. The festival will bring people from the surrounding cities (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich) as well as other regional areas to experience this destination as a viable location for artistic endeavours. They gain exposure in an area where they otherwise would not be heard, as well as opportunity to expand their networks. Congruently, regional audiences who would not normally have the experience of live, original music on a regular basis are able to immerse themselves in a music festival and be exposed to various genres of music.

    The Music:

Musical activity will involve a main stage and third, acoustic, area. The main stage will have bands playing 40 minute sets of original music, with solo or duo musicians playing 20 minute sets whilst the next band sets up to play. The third stage area, created in conjunction with a local business and utilising their space will allow more musicians to busk with acoustic music. The second stage area will be dedicated to other performing arts such as dance, choir, and poetry. It will also provide space for some of the participating musicians to run workshops in their area of expertise. An art gallery marquee will provide dedicated space for visual artists to exhibit their works.

The bands and solo artists chosen to perform on the main stage are all practicing professionals in the Brisbane music scene and beyond. Many are releasing recorded artworks such as albums, singles or EPs in the months before the festival to further support this artistic endeavour.

To enable this event to launch last year, the artists involved volunteered their time and talent. This year, business sponsorships are allowing us to properly pay these generous musicians accordingly. The festival itself will also provide a platform for artists of all mediums to retail visual and recorded art and merchandise. Homespun Bazaar 2015 was run off a minimal budget. Through both thorough planning and detailed budgeting, the event for 2016 should run to a high professional standard whilst maintaining efficiency and return for investments in the form of community outcomes as previously presented.

    The Stage:

The stage for Homespun Bazaar has been cafefully chosen to fulfill the needs of musicians, organisers, sponsors and audience.  It is a 9m x 6m stage built into a truck trailer.  It provides a professional stage with rigging for lights and sound, ample space to provide a visually enthralling show for the audience, greenroom and gazebo space for bands and ample visual area for sponsorship promotion.  The stage is provided by stagecoach stage hire.  We have already raised over $1000 by holding fundraising events, and selling goods at local markets.  Your contribution will allow us to pay the balance of the stage hire, with any additional funds going towards running costs for the event, or held over for next year's stage.

    Why should you sponsor?

Sponsor a Band or Solo Artist

What’s in it for the business?
Homespun Bazaar 2016 offers a unique advertising opportunity for your business. Businesses who sponsor a band or solo artist will have access to their talents, and widespread promotion, as well as a dedicated set time for your artists to publicise your sponsorship, and boast the features and benefits of your product or service. Homespun Bazaar 2015 attracted approximately 700
people in total, and we expect this year’s event to have many times more. Your business can be promoted in a community focused, and exciting new way.

What’s in it for the band?
Your sponsorship dollars go directly to the band or artist you sponsor. This is a not-for-profit event, and no funds or fees are collected by the event organisers for your support. We believe in supporting our original, live music industry and part of that is helping artists be paid for their amazing talents. They also get the support and acknowledgement of your business, and we hope, some new fans.

What’s in it for the event?
We get great bands! Homespun Bazaar 2015 was an amazing experience with some incredible bands involved, who are keen to come back and entertain us again, along with a few additions. The calibre of talent we have surrounding us is incredible. We believe strongly that, like any studied, practiced and educated professional, musicians should be paid accordingly for their talent and time.

    How does it work?
    1. Choose whether to sponsor a band ($400 - 40 minute set) or solo artist ($200 - 20 minute set)
    2. Choose your sponsor band or solo artist from our lineup
    3. The band/artist will record a 30 second video mentioning your business. You will get a copy and we will share on our social networking, and website.
    4. We recommend seeing your band/artist live before the event.
    5. We will put you in contact with your sponsor band/artist to discuss what they will do during their set to advertise your business, and what you might do to promote their appearance.
    6. Come along on the day and see your band/artist in action! Press sponsors will be there, and photos of all the sets will appear in the November issue of Rimshot Magazine as well as music blog Music Is My Muse. Grab a photo with your band while you’re at it!

    Renee Barlow

Reneé Barlow is a freelance photographer and graphic designer. Greatly influenced by her grandfather, Jim Barlow, she began her musical experience at age five, with both piano lessons and time in a radio station, being taught the technical aspects of production, as well as reading subscription ads on air. At fourteen, she started her first business in teaching piano, and continued for eighteen years. She had a brief career in audio engineering, after studying at SBIT's Contemporary Music Centre. Her roles included studio management at Burbank Studios and Chief Audio Engineer at Tanglewood Studios in Victoria Point. After a creative hiatus, work in the fashion industry introduced her to professional photography and design. In 2009 she launched Reneé Barlow Creative Services, providing product and family photography as well as design, primarily in the fashion industry. She expanded early in 2014, with Scarlet Harlotte, adding portraiture and band design services to her repoitoire. In 2015, she has collaborated on Calendar Girls, bringing her photographic skills to calendars for communities and organisations, and launched Rimshot Magazine, combining her loves of both her musical roots, and artistic expression, with community living. She currently resides in the small town of Kooralbyn, Queensland, Australia and now runs Homespun Bazaar, a music festival and market event in the Scenic Rim.
