The HalfLeaf Basketball Tournament is a competitive 3-on-3, half-court event that brings together 32 of the best teams from across the region for a one-night showdown with a $1,000 cash prize on the line. But it’s more than just basketball.

The event blends sport, culture, and community into one atmosphere — with high-paced games, mic’d up moments, highlight reels, music, vendors, and a crowd full of energy. It’s a space for athletes to compete, for brands to connect, and for the community to show out.

My name is Sahib Dhariwal, and I’m the founder of HalfLeaf — a grassroots initiative focused on building community through competitive sports, starting with basketball. I grew up in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, and I’ve seen first-hand how much talent and energy this area has, but how few opportunities exist to showcase it.

HalfLeaf started with a simple idea: host a high-quality, free-entry tournament, give away a real cash prize, and create a platform that celebrates local athletes. We put our own money into the first event — no outside funding, just passion and follow-through. The result? A packed gym, 16 teams, and a community that asked us, “When’s the next one?”

Now we’re scaling up. Our next tournament will host 32 teams and draw over 200 people in one night. We’re building momentum, but more importantly, we’re building trust — with players, with our audience, and with local brands who want to be part of something real.
