About the event
The annual fara Gala Brisbane is sure to be a fabulous night with some very special guests, great food, wine and entertainment in support of fara's quest to find a cure for Friedreich Ataxia.
Money raised at the fara Gala will support Friedreich ataxia research and ensure Australia is ready for Friedreich ataxia gene therapy clinical trials.
Why should you sponsor?
riedreich ataxia is a debilitating, life shortening degenerative neuro‐muscular disorder, which affects about 1 in 30,000 people in Australia and New Zealand.
It is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 18 years and robs children and young adults of their mobility.
Friedreich ataxia leads to loss of muscle co-ordination, fatigue, vision impairment, hearing loss and slurred speech, scoliosis (curvature of the spine), diabetes and serious heart conditions.
It is caused by an inherited genetic mutation that limits the production of a protein called frataxin. 1 in 90 people are carriers and don’t even know it until it affects their family.
Although there has been significant progress towards treatments, today there is no cure.
WHO IS FARA
Friedreich Ataxia Research Association Australia (fara) is a not for profit organisation that supports research into treatments and a cure for Friedreich ataxia.
fara’s mission is to slow, stop, and reverse the damage caused by this rare disease. fara has contributed over $4 million to Friedreich ataxia research in Australia since its inception in 2003.
Sarah CoudreyI'm part of the organising committee for the Brisbane FARA gala. This event is community organised with most of the committee either having FA or caring for someone with FA. My best friend, Samantha, and her sister both have FA and we have been fundraising for many years to help find a cure. I've travelled overseas with my friend and met many of her international friends who are also affected by FA and other types of ataxia. Sam is such a light in my life. Through helping with fundraising, I can only hope to give back a portion of what she has given to me.
