Formula One In Schools,

About the event

We are Formula Force, and we are competing in the F1 in Schools Challenge. On April 17th, we became Scotland Regional Champions and awarded a place in the national finals. We also won Fastest Car, Best Engineered Car and Best Research and Development awards. We consist of 6 highly committed and hard working team members from Knox Academy, East Lothian. The team was brought together to enter and attempt to win an internationally recognised competition: F1 in Schools. We will be competing at Silverstone in the national finals in April. We then hope to represent the UK at the world finals, which is being held in Austin, Texas.

The processes that student teams will follow in the competition are the same as those a real Formula One team would follow; from creating their initial business plan to designing, manufacturing and racing their car. They will use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and will analyse their designs using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and drag calculation software. They will then use Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) machinery to manufacture their car, before testing it using flow software and wind and smoke tunnels.

There is a lot of media attention surrounding F1 In Schools and the success it brings. In 2014 the national champions, Colossus F1, were interviewed at length by the BBC and Sky Sports, giving them the opportunity to enthuse about the competition and promote their sponsors. Furthermore, photos of the team, in uniform complete with sponsor’s logos, regularly made it into national coverage across tyhe globe. Everything that advertises us, advertises you. Now we've made it through to the national finals we need more financial support than ever. Formula Force

F1 in schools is a worldwide competition for school children across the country. It is a non profit educational organisation, which relies solely upon support and contributions from industry to be able to operate and deliver a World-class STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) competition that engages with millions of students across the Globe. The aim of F1 in Schools is to provide a fun and hands-on STEM initiative that demonstrates many different levels of Science and Engineering, in a positive and attractive light. The challenge provides students with the opportunity to develop key skills such as communication, presenting and team working, which will form the foundation of their future in whichever career path they choose. Finally, they will race their car on our 20m F1 in Schools racetrack, to see who has designed and manufactured the fastest car.
