  • About the event

The Lisgar Robotics Club (LRC) is a robotics team from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in downtown Ottawa, competing in the international FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. We are a group of high school students interested in the STEM fields. In our rookie year this past season, our team was hugely successful, winning all three rookie-specific awards. We were proud to rank 42nd out of 157 teams in the very competitive Ontario district, and qualified for the provincial championship. As we enter our second season, we are planning on recruiting more team members, participating in more public outreach events, and organizing more robot demonstrations to help inspire the next generation, igniting their interest in STEM. We believe that with the help from sponsors like you, we can help inspire the future generation of engineers, scientists, and leaders.

    Why should you sponsor?

Each year our team attends two competitions, with the goal of advancing to the provincial and world championships.  FIRST hosts the largest robotics competitions in the world for students K-12 in four different programs. The largest program, the FIRST Robotics Competition, involves over 85,000 high school students from over 4,000 teams representing 26 countries. In the past season, we competed in competitions at Durham College and Nipissing University, as well as the provincials in Mississauga. STEM activities in school are often looked down upon as ‘nerdy’, and we were inspired by the amount of like-minded students at the competitions.

During off-seasons, we often hold robotics demonstrations and outreach events, sharing our passion of robotics and STEM in general. One of our most common locations to hold a demonstration is at summer camps. Young people often don’t have a concrete idea for their futures, and we would like to spark an interest in STEM.

When the new game for the season’s competition is announced, teams have only 6 weeks to build a 120 lb. robot capable of competing in intense, 3 minute matches. However, even though it is a robotics competition, many other skills are required. In addition to learning engineering, technology, trades, problem solving, and time management skills; students build teamwork, communication, business, entrepreneurial and leadership skills. After the season is completed, we work to prepare for the next competition all the while promoting science and technology though seminars, workshops, and outreach events.

To enter the competition, our team must pay a $7000 registration fee, and buy parts costing approximately $3000 to build our robot. This is especially challenging as our school lacks any shop facilities. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to covecosts of construction of the robot, registration fees, tools, equipment, transportation, and other costs. We hope that you will help us demonstrate our abilities during the 2019 FIRST Launch season. Please consider sponsoring this worthwhile effort and see our attached sponsorship opportunities, our way of celebrating the contributions of our sponsors in promoting the development of science, technology and entrepreneurship among youth.

FIRST Robotics Competition Team 7267, the Lisgar Robotics Club, represents downtown Ottawa’s Lisgar Collegiate Institute. Lisgar C.I. has always focused on encouraging and expanding education opportunities in the field of science and technology for students, and drive to expose interested students (not just at Lisgar) to STEM activities is at the core of our team mission.

As one of Ottawa’s highest performing schools, students at Lisgar receive a strong education the the theoretical aspects of the STEM fields. Unfortunately, our school’s location in a heritage building limits the ability to balance this strong theoretical education with the hands-on technical and shop component that is present at most other area schools. We strongly believe that Lisgar students should be given the opportunity to participate in hands-on STEM educational activities and the FIRST Robotics Competition, the largest Robotics Competition for high school students worldwide, provides the perfect opportunity to do this.

The Lisgar Robotics Club challenges students to learn and build technical, leadership, entrepreneurial, safety, communication, and outreach skills through real-world experiences. Students learn from each other, teachers, community mentors, and community supporters expanding their learning beyond the confines of the classroom in a fun and interactive way.

Lisgar Robotics Club, Team 7267 also believes in spreading FIRST’s mission beyond the team and school, planning and executing outreach activities for both other students and the wider community.  Over the past two months in the summer, we connected with various summer camps throughout Ottawa, hosting 15 one-hour long presentations and demos to youth about FIRST Robotics Competition and FIRST Lego League, impacting over 300 youth.

As a second-year team, we are pleased to join with the RoboRavens (4783), Merge Robotics (2706), and the Aztecs (2994) to grow the FIRST community in the Ottawa region. In the upcoming 2019 FIRST Launch Season, we will be mentoring a rookie FIRST Robotics Competition from Colonel By Secondary School as well as a rookie FIRST Lego League team from York St. Public School.
