  • About the event

Family Matters is preparing for its 32nd Annual Walk & Roll-A-Thon, a much-anticipated community event that brings together youth, families, and the community in joyful celebration. Last year, we raised more than $50,000 to support Family Matters’ youth development and community collaboration work. This year, we are looking forward to a day filled with stories, music, carnival games, and food, and we are inviting you to be a part of it by sponsoring the event. Sponsorship is available at a variety of levels.

    Why should you sponsor?

For more than 34 years, Family Matters has partnered with youth, families, and communities to cultivate a way of living in the world that develops strong relationships, meaningful communication, and safe environments for courageous social change. We seek to build an equitable society for all.

The Walk & Roll-A-Thon will take place on Saturday, October 2nd at Willye B. White Park (1610 W. Howard Street). We anticipate 200-300 attendees and our goal is to raise $62,000. All proceeds will fund Family Matters’ programs: The Family Matters School, a specialized K-3rd grade school designed for children who thrive outside of a traditional classroom; Partners in Learning tutor/mentoring; and Project RISE, our teen job skills training and leadership development program.

We would be deeply grateful for your donation and for your support of our work. All Walk & Roll-A-Thon sponsors will be mentioned on our website and at the event. You may also promote your business by including printed material and/or business cards to be available to participants.

    About Family Matters

    Family Matters’ History

Family Matters began as a single program born from the vision of working parents seeking a safe place for their children to go after school. Established as a grassroots effort by, and for, families in 1987, Family Matters has developed into a neighborhood anchor that offers a range of year-round, community-driven programs and activities.

In 1992, Family Matters moved into our current home, a vintage residential three-flat apartment building on a tree-lined block. Participants have worked to transform the building into an extended home for youth, staff, and families.  Some of the amenities include a library with an ever-growing collection of critically acclaimed books written by Indigenous authors and authors of color, LGBTQIA+ authors, and authors with disabilities; a computer lab; inviting kitchens and cozy sitting areas; the Gordy Music Studio, a community recording studio open to all; and a backyard oasis designed for joy-filled community gatherings and performances.
