On its own, Jacqui’s voice is remarkable. But its journey into the broader world is astonishing. Raised as a Mennonite, she was forced to be the boy of her birth gender. There was no education past the 10th grade. There was no exploration of identity outside the narrow definitions prescribed in a closed cult. Held within stifling confines, she struggled to conform. Her father is a bishop in the church. Isolated in this culture, she was forced to make life choices that could not be sustained.
Her childhood did provide a salvation she could build upon. Reading was permitted and not heavily policed. The catalog of books she has devoured is extensive and varied. And then there was song. Fortunately, music is a keystone of the many and contant community gatherings. Her astonishing voice gave her a place to belong and refuge.
At the age of 26 she bravely departed her childhood life. Leaving all she knew behind, she came to Philadelphia as a gay man. In a few short years she discovered her trans self. Along with her blossoming womanhood she has embraced her voice. Committed to developing it to her full potential, she has devoted her life to study. She attended Settlement Music School and continues her vocal training with Ira Siff, Vocal / Repertoire coach and internationally acclaimed master teacher. She is fleshing out her missing education in short order. Already under her belt is an Associate of Arts degree, a program from which she graduated with Highest Honors. And now she prepares to attend the Bachelor of Music program of the prestigious Westminster Conservatory of Music. Her potential and talent coupled with her drive will take her further than she dares to dream.
This recital is your opportunity to be part of her stellar rise. Your generosity will become rocket fuel.
