20 Year Birthday Gala,

Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, New York, United States Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, New York, United States

  • About the event

Developing Artists provides opportunities for underserved teens to reach their full potential through a practical application of the performing arts.

We help  diverse students to proclaim themselves as ARTivists (Artists + Activists), to find their place and their connection in their community, and to bring about positive social change.

Developing Artists are teen ARTivists relentlessly fighting for positive social change...and we need allies like YOU.

A mission statement summarizing the purpose and activities of the organization

Developing Artists is dedicated to providing opportunities for underserved teens to reach their full potential through a practical application of the performing arts. We help diverse students to proclaim themselves as artists and activists, to find their place and their connection in their community, and to bring about positive social change through participation in the arts.

DA offers sequential arts training and performance opportunities for underserved high school students, ages 13-19, in the New York metropolitan area. Our core programs are year-round Developing Artists Classes, which train students in various performing arts techniques and theater history, and our annual REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival, an outgrowth of our classes that began as the brainchild of two DA members in 2001. Through our ongoing performing arts classes and the REBEL VERSES summer festival, DA encourages students to recognize the collective power of art as a tool to activate positive social change, and empowers young people by giving them the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make their voices heard in their own communities and throughout their lives. DA offers performing arts programs free of charge to participating students. We request consideration of a grant award which will support classroom rental and teaching artist salaries for our core programs in 2020, which will enable 126 students – otherwise lacking in the means or opportunity to study theater – to participate in our programs this year.

Since our inception nearly 20 years ago, Developing Artists has been committed to providing rigorous theater training for young people without other resources for arts learning. Through our regular performing arts classes and the annual REBEL VERSES, we encourage our students to recognize the power of art as an activist tool to bring about positive social change, and to make their voices heard in their communities and in their lives.

Developing Artists serves diverse young people who can benefit from learning to express themselves through the arts, but who would not otherwise have access to quality training and performance programs. This project is important to our primary audience because all DA training and performance programs are offered to participating students at no cost. In FY20, we aim to provide direct service to 126 teenage students through DA Classes, and 100 more from other young theater ensembles that we will present in our annual REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival. Again, there is no cost for any young person to enroll in Developing Artists’ Classes or appear in the REBEL VERSES Festival.

An example of DA’s impact following outreach to public schools occurred when the art teacher at PS/IS 284 contacted us about a young student whose family was living in a shelter following a fire. After three years with us, he said, “If it weren’t for Developing Artists I wouldn’t be here today... [DA] helped me stay away from a life of crime like my family before me.” Following DA, this student was accepted into Gramercy Arts High School.

    Developing Artists

Developing Artists (DA) is dedicated to providing opportunities for underdog (underserved) teens to reach their full potential through a practical application of the performing arts. We give students from culturally and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds the opportunity to proclaim themselves as artists and to find their place and their connection to their community through performing arts classes and our innovative signature program REBEL VERSES Youth Arts Festival.

As adults, we know navigating the pressures of today's society is perilous, but for a young person without any outlet for expression, a healthy development is impossible. Developing Artists addresses this need for teens by creating a forum to navigate life's increasing challenges (e.g. age discrimination, social injustices, gender equality, institutional racism, economic inequality, sexism); to use their voice in dealing with issues like rage or fear; and channel that energy into self- expression and self-confidence. DA is particularly committed to engaging with young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and has a track record of engaging positively with those who face significant barriers in their daily lives. Our core commitment is to bring rigorously vigorous performing arts training to those young people most in need; drawn from lone parent backgrounds; from ethnic minority communities; those who have suffered physical, sexual or mental abuse.
