About the event
Dunks for Diabetes is a fundraiser consisting of multiple annual 3 on 3 basketball tournaments that take place in the late winter and spring of each year. The tournaments honor Dr. Fred Brancati, an extremely influential doctor who researched diabetes at Johns Hopkins. Our goal is to honor Dr. Fred by spreading awareness about diabetes and raising as much money as possible to support the American Diabetes Association while having as much fun as possible through exercise and the love of the game of basketball!
Dunks for Diabetes Baltimore first took place in 2012 at the first ever Dunks for Diabetes tournament. It was started by Jordan Yaffe, a seventh grader at Gilman school, and the event has continued ever since. There were 16 teams in 2012, 32 in 2013, 32 in 2014, and 48 in 2015. The tournament has grown into a special annual event in the Baltimore community.
In 2016, Dunks for Diabetes Baltimore will have five tournaments: 1 open, 2 middle school, and 2 upper school tournaments. There will also be the second annual Camp Manitou sponsored three-point contest mid-way through the event along with special speakers between tournaments. There will also be the highly popular raffle as well as t-shirt sales at the event.
