JMHS Theatre and Drama College were accepted by the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF) to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe! One of only 40 school theatre programs throughout North American chosen for this honor.
My students have developed the play Romeo y Julieta from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as a bilingual reflection of our community. Performed in Original Elizabethan Pronunciation and Colloquial Spanish, Romeo y Julieta tells the story of our star crossed lovers amidst a bitter feud between rival Hispanic families.
Touching the very soul of conflict within our Latino community, Romeo y Julieta and the students of JMHS Theatre and Drama College face the challenges they face daily, the treat of gang violence, poverty, an inadequate education base and bitter conflict between immigrant families, to express what only love can show.
Performing at the Edinburgh Fringe is an opportunity these students from an underserved, immigrant suburb of Los Angeles will only have once and an honor our school has never before achieved.
We are the only Bi-lingual performing group accepted by AHSTF and the only with an Hispanic student base of performers. Please support these hard-working, very deserving students!
