  • About the event

    The project is Part of the UNESCO International Year of Light 2015. It constitutes the  closing ceremony of the UK effort.


    The project overview:

    To light up 12 important buildings, churches, water towers and monuments in Colchester, using several light artists. 

    To Celebrate Diwali with a sea of lights and pyrotechnics in Colchester Castle Park

    To 3D projection Map onto Colchester Castle and light all the surrounding parkland with colour and image work.

    To provide a permanent piece of public art to commemorate Sir William Gilberd, father of magnetism and electricity at his birthplace in Typerleys House, Colchester.

    To commission and perform a choral piece on the subject of  Light.

    To project image work onto the facade of Firstsite, Colchester's contemporary Art Gallery. 

    To hold a light festival with music and dance at the MInories Gallery.

    To hold a lecture series on Light in science, medicine and industry.

    To hold an evening of astronomy at Layer Marney Towers.

    To Hold a major photographic exhibition at SlackSpace.

    To create and display up to 10 light artworks throughout the town.


    The whole festival celebrates the end of the UNESCO International Year of Light in the UK and will be attended and opened ( subject to diary availability) by HRH Prince Andrew, our patron.

To Light up ten public buildings, Churches Water tower and other buildings for a fortnight: To create and site up to ten light artworks in various shops and galleries, including equipment hire, installation, marketing, insurances and all other costs. The building light and the artworks will be individually designed by a number of artists.

To provide a spectacular 3D projection mapped show on the face of Colchester Castle.. The show lasts five minutes and is repeated regularly for new audiences. Between showings there are video artworks and Vox pops from the crowds queing to see the Colchester castle interior and the temporary ice skating rink. All the surrounding trees will be lit in colour change LED. The show will be attended by HRH Prince Andrew ( subject to diary availability). The following day the same equipment will be used for a video event on the walls of Firstsite, our contemporary art gallery as part of the Cultural Quarter. To provide a permanent bronze artwork in the grounds of Tymperleys House Colchester, depicting Sir William Gilberd, who discovered magnetism and electricity. The artwork is a full length figure carrying a large book. Small projectors are embedded which show information. The amount requested covers artists fee, security, manufacture of the bronze, siting and maintenance. The artwork is free to view at all normal hours and is locked at night. The work will be unveiled by HRH Prince Andrew ( subject to diary availability) We offer: Sponsors name permanently etched into the bronze. Invitation to opening ceremony.
