  • About the event

    OVERVIEW

In the U.S. since January 2016 more than 500 citizens have been killed by the police. Despite being minorities, African Americans account for approximately 24% of those deaths. A large amount of urban area citizens in the United States are upset by these statistics. A great deal of people feel as if there is a disconnect between the police that serve our communities, and the residents.

    GOALS

    1. Unite and strengthen the relationship between local law enforcements and the community. 2. Raise awareness of the different youth organizations in the community. 3. Raise money for Black Male College Explorers Program and The Police Athletic Leagues. 4. Give the police department a chance to speak to the community. 5. Give the community a chance to speak to the police department. 6. Discuss resolutions for the current state of crisis.

The Black Male College Explorers Program is an at-risk prevention / intervention program designed specifically to prevent black males from dropping out of high school; facilitate their admission to college; and significantly increase their chances of earning a college degree. Middle and high schools from Tallahassee and major cities all over Florida are selected as participating schools. Participating schools are asked to identify at-risk males enrolled in grades 7 through 11.  A team of school and community leaders is required to provide supportive services for the student during the regular year.  FAMU provides six weeks of highly concentrated developmental experiences, which includes weekly seminars, workshops and motivational trips, during the summer.

The Miami Police Athletic League (Miami PAL) mission is to enhance the relationship between the City of Miami Police Department and the youth of the community; through positive interactions and mentoring. The focus is to prevent juvenile delinquency through the use of academics, athletics, and artistic activities.
