About our event

The National Conference of State Societies (NCSS) is seeking your support in continuing and enhancing its annual National Cherry Blossom Program held each spring in Washington, DC.

The U.S. Congress established the NCSS in 1952 as the parent organization of Societies from the 50 States, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. Territories: American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands with one of its purposes to promote and organize cultural programs and events in the District of Columbia. Community, business, and government leaders from all national and international participants have taken part in this world-renowned event celebrating Japan’s cherished gift of cherry trees to the United States.

The Cherry Blossom Program is a weeklong educational, cultural, and professional development program which celebrates the unique and enduring friendship between the United States and Japan. Each State Society selects their Delegate based on their achievements in academics, philanthropy and service, leadership, and professional accomplishments.
During this week, the Delegates frequently visit the White House, meet with their states’ representatives at a Congressional Reception, visit various embassies, perform community service, and encourage the friendship between the U.S. and Japan through various cultural events, including the Lantern Lighting at the Tidal Basin, a reception at the Japanese Ambassador’s residence, and Cherry Blossom parade.
Cherry Blossom Delegates also attend a Women’s Empowerment Conference where we bring a panel of successful women to discuss their life experiences, share career pathway guidance, and address various timely topics.

The Program seeks to connect Delegates with potential mentors, expand their professional network, and share learnings from the 3,000 alumnae who have participated in the program. This is the 76th year of the Cherry Blossom Program, and we celebrate our esteemed alumnae including Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK), Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (WV), and Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI).

Our program combines an iconic Washington, DC tradition with a program focused on empowering young leaders across the U.S. and abroad. This year, we have added an essay competition to highlight the exceptional accomplishments of our Cherry Blossom Delegates. The winner will be recognized at our Cherry Blossom Gala and awarded an educational grant.

Your support of this exceptional and longstanding program will not only give you access to attending various events throughout the week but also provide you with an opportunity to reach hundreds of thousands of people to promote your organization. We offer a variety of sponsorship opportunities and hope we can count on you to assist us in continuing this amazing program and promoting international peace and progress.

“As the 2023 United States Cherry Blossom Queen, my journey was an extraordinary blend of cultural immersion, leadership, and personal growth. Representing Iowa, the Cherry Blossom Princess Program allowed me to celebrate the long-standing alliance between the U.S. and Japan, connect with inspiring women leaders, and delve into rich
cultural experiences sacred to the people of Japan. By a spin of fate, I was humbled to be chosen as the 2023 Queen and travel to Japan for a life-changing trip. Witnessing the deep respect and appreciation for our nations’ shared history was profoundly moving. This experience, far more than a title, was an opportunity to represent the U.S. as an ambassador of goodwill. I will forever cherish this time and encourage other aspiring women to join and contribute to the 75-year legacy of this program.”
— Madeline McGarry, Iowa, 2023/2024 U.S. Cherry Blossom Queen

“I have always been passionate about US foreign policy, history and US engagement with strategic international partners like Japan. It has been so meaningful hearing from Japanese cultural leaders and experts, as well as the Japanese Ambassador, about the US -Japan friendship, in addition to the beautiful aspects of Japanese culture. It has also been very
impactful and empowering to meeting other emerging g female leaders who share my ambitions and passions and those who are quite different from me. I know there are connections I will carry with me for years.”
— Hannah Schwartz, Missouri, 2021

“I really appreciated the Women’s Empowerment Conference and was surprised and amazed at the work the outstanding speakers have achieved. It was eye opening to see and hear the evidence of this during
the conference and I left feeling empowered and inspired. This program is the first time I have experienced Japanese culture and it showed me
how important it is to be culturally aware beyond America’s borders. The princesses are diverse in ideas, beliefs and experiences, yet we all have one thing in common and that is we are driven!” Alivia Roberts, Mississippi, 2021

“This program has given me a new outlook not only on myself but my future and surroundings as well. Growing up as an only child I struggled when it came to making friends. This program has afforded me the opportunity to connect with so many women who share the same goal-oriented drive. This program has also given me a boost in confidence. I learned so many things both professionally and culturally and gained access to advice that will not only help me as I continue my journey in life but will resonate in my heart forever.” Alayah Phipps, U.S. Virgin Islands, 2021
