About the event
Joe will be starting a non-profit to help others traveling from NWMO to Children's Mercy Hospital Oncology floor.
Door 2 Floor will provide a little help for families facing the long road ahead of them. Each new cancer patient and their family may receive a gift basket of the following items:
1. Fuel card, the daily drive back and forth takes it's toll on the fuel budget.
2. Restaurant card, while in treatment food is almost the last thing on a child's mind. However when hunger strikes they do eat and eat.
3. Gift card for house cleaning. While tending to the needs of your child dealing with cancer the house is usually the last thing on your mind, or you are so exhausted that it falls by the wayside.
4. "Do not disturb - busy kicking cancer's butt" shirt in the cancer color, his mom designed this shirt and he (after the treatment ended) explained how much it helped. People stare, they don't mean to but it happens. With this shirt you don't have to explain as much.
5. We are trying to figure out a way to get them a home cooked meal.That way, if the child isn't admitted, they can be comfortable in their own home.
When you go through a thing like cancer, it's the little things that make the biggest difference. If Joe can make one kid's experience a little better - he says - his journey was worth it.

monica fordJoe Ford was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma stage 2B with bulk disease in May 2014. He fought hard and is winning his battle, being declared in remission Febuary 12, 2016.
He wanted to start a fundraiser that would, in the future, help many more families dealing with childhood cancer. During his treatment he saw the toll it took on his mom, not paying attention to his own pain. All the fuel and food expenses, along with the help needed at home after a long day of treatment. One day, after his long chemo, his mom fell asleep on the couch. She was just going to sit a minute, when she woke up he had the kitchen cleaned and was straightening the living room. When asked why he said, "Mom, you are exhausted. You take care of me without complaining and you needed a break. I know what we need to add to the Door 2 Floor basket, a gift card for a cleaning service. That way the moms can relax and hold their kids when they get home from the hospital." He is amazing.
That's where the fishing tournament comes in. Joe LOVES everything to do with the outdoors. Hunting, camping, but most importantly FISHING. He would live outside if he was allowed. The idea of a fishing tournament came after a long day of treatment when he looked outside and said, "Man, mom, I can't wait to go fishing next summer." (He was too week and tired to go last year, 2014) So we talked and he came up with the idea. This tournament is his baby, his mom is merely the designer and promoter, every aspect was/will be decided by Joe.
