The Garden of Health, Inc. is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide fresh produce and special dietary foods to low-income families. Established in 2015, we saw an extreme lack of healthy and dietary food options (including gluten free, heart healthy, diabetic friendly, and/or foods free of one or more of the top 8 allergens) available in our local food pantries. With over 25% of our general population having special dietary needs, and over one third of U.S. adults having obesity, the necessity of greater access to healthier food choices is overwhelming. Specifically, the State of Pennsylvania classifies in the second-worse category (30-35%) of self-reported obesity prevalence. (cdc.gov)
Garden of Health, Inc. consists of two main programs: Food Pantry Distribution & Education and Family Gardening. Beginning in 2015 with just one garden and one food pantry in Montgomery county, Garden of Health, Inc. has expanded to distributing to 15 food pantries, five low-income senior housing, and senior centers, and 23 gardens for low-income families within Bucks and Montgomery counties. Our programs have had such a substantial impact on our local communities that we are currently experiencing a wait list of families who wish to harvest their own garden, and numerous food pantries across the State to still reach.
We are hosting our First Annual “BE A HERO” Walk on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Upper Salford Park in Schwenksville, PA to assist in the request by our communities to expand our outreach. This fun 4-mile Walk will be Superhero-themed, with each participant encouraged to dress up as their favorite superhero! The Walk will also feature face painting, character autographs, food, music, and much more.
We cordially invite you to participate as a Sponsor of our BE A HERO Walk.
Your sponsorship will assist in our efforts to maximize our impact by reaching more poverty-stricken families across our State who are in desperate need of assistance in building a healthier lifestyle for themselves and their children. By becoming a sponsoring partner, you can have a hand in propelling our vision of ending the income divide to access of fresh produce and special dietary foods for our fellow neighbors who need it the most.
My name is Carol and I am the founder of Garden of Health.
I started this non-profit after spending years trying to get one of my children's medical illnesses figured out. I watched my child spend day after day curled up in a fetal position with stomach pain and nausea, headaches that never went away, joint and muscle pain along with other symptoms.
After many doctors some who refused to examine my child, telling us, yes right in front of the child, that it was all in their head and they needed to go see a physiatrist and be put on medicine we finally found one doctor at a time that figured out what was going on. A neurologist that actually believed they were suffering from migraines, they run in the family, and put them on a medicine at the right dose so the migraines stopped! A gastroenterologist who started at the beginning and we learned not only did they have celiac but also gastroparesis (a paralyzed stomach). There were a few other diagnoses but after many, many years they were finally able to participate in life again. It was like they were born again!
