A Seat At The Table,

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

  • About the event

A Seat At The Table is a day long summit bringing together some of Ohio's most passionate high school students with the goal of bridging the gap between young people and civic engagement. In 2014, the turnout for voters between ages 18-29 was 13%. We believe that the youth generation is passionate and motivated to address the issues they care about, but don't necessarily connect civic engagement with social change. A Seat At The Table seeks to encourage young people to use their voice by showing up to vote, as well as through community organizing and volunteer and leadership programs. We believe change happens in local communities as much as it happens in offices leading all the way up to the White House, and by bringing the two together, we can build a generation of young changemakers ready and willing to become leaders on local and national levels.

The day will feature some of the nation's greatest young leaders, ready to share their stories of why civic engagement is important in their lives and why other young people should view it as important too. Our featured speaker is Sarah Clements, a 19 year old Georgetown freshman who founded Newtown Jr. Action Alliance in response to the Sandy Hook shootings, where her mom was an elementary school teacher. Sarah was named a Champion of Change by the White House and hopes to continue connecting other young people to issues they care about.

Sponsoring A Seat At The Table is an opportunity to connect with young people by helping them tap into the passions and causes that make them who they are and help shape them into the leaders they can be. We've already been endorsed by Generation Progress, Rock the Vote, and the International Youth Council. We are also working to establish a monthly Twitter chat about youth in politics and civic change. This is an opportunity to connect with teens where they are and through the issues they care about.
