Math Olympics: Going For Fluency Gold!
My students need screen printed green and gold t-shirts, water, food, and supplies to support the 2016 Math Olympics.
My Students
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." -Confucius I feel it is so important not only for students to be exposed to the math they need but for them also to see it, touch it, and try it on their own. Real learning in math does not happen until a student has struggled.
We are an urban elementary school made up of approximately 600 students grades k-5.
We are currently classified as a priority school. Last year we had approximately 300 students but we merged with another elementary school which has caused our school to now double in size. 100% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Despite challenges, our students come to school eager to learn everyday.
My Project
This year, students will participate in our 2nd Annual Math Olympics. We will split students into two teams (green vs. gold) and they will compete in a variety of grade level active math activities. They will compete in actives such as "Math Fact Fluency Scooter Races", where students will race on a scooter to the other end of the gym that has math facts waiting for them. These games( and others like it) will increase both physical activity and math fluency. These t-shirts will help support the event by visually splitting students into two teams. This event was such a success last year that students have been asking when we will be doing it again this year. But due to our unprecedented growth, we do not have the funds to support what we were able to do last year. With these funds we will get much needed math fluency, more physical activity, and an amazing day for students to show school pride.
Our students are looking forward to the Math Olympics this year.
We would like to show them that where they come from does not impact the type of supports we can provide them. These students work hard in the math class every day they deserve a day filled with math sports to engage their brain and muscles. Help us build our "math muscles" and support our Math Olympics!!!
I am a Mathematics Leader at an urban elementary school. This is my 10th year in education. I take pride in providing my students with every opportunity possible to experience the same types of activities tht those in a suburban school district might experience.
